Hackney

A district in northeast London is Hackney. Forming around the London Borough area's two thirds to which it gives its name, it is the London Borough of Hackney centre that is administrative. Its south-eastern and southern ends falls under the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, although Hackney is in the London Borough of Hackney.

To distinguish it from the village which developed in the vicinity of Mare Street, it was referred to as Hackney Proper in the past. For centuries, Hackney was based on the Ancient Parish of Hackney, the largest in Middlesex. With Hackney part of Ossulstone Hundred, parishes in Middlesex were into Hundreds.

To form the London Borough of Hackney, with Stoke Newington and Shoreditch, Hackney merged in 1965. Instead Victoria Park being part of the Bethnal Green Metropolitan Borough, which part of Poplar Borough was half of Hackney Wick, Victoria Park and southern Hackney Wick were never part of any Hackney administrative unit.

However this watercourse was culverted in the 19th century, the Hackney Brook was the watercourse that is largest, natural and internal, entering Hackney at the Stamford Hill's southern foot in the NW and exiting in the south-east. Hackney Wick, Hackney Central, London Fields, Homerton, West Hackney, and South Hackney, are sub-districts of Hackney. Closed on 1 December 1870, it was replaced by a hub the same day to Mare Street's west, named Hackney and by Edwin Henry Horne designed.

In 2015 by LOROL, a link between Hackney Downs and Hackney Central was opened. A passenger connection had linked the stations until Hackney Central's closure in 1944. With the Tower Division's Hackney part (aka Tower Hamlets), around London Rapid growth of the Population saw the Hundred split during the 1600s into 'Divisions'.

To the 1965 modern borough creation and from the Middle Ages, Hackney with boundaries that were consistent was an administrative unit. With the Lower Lea Valley and the SW right-angle, forming the hypotenuse by running NW-SE, the Hackney's boundary outline resembles a triangle that is right-angled. The Overground serves Hackney, and, as well as Hackney Downs, it is named after the area of Hackney.
